Carpet and Concrete Floor

How to Install a Carpet Into a Concrete Floor?

Indoor-outdoor carpet is an attractive upgrade when installed on concrete patios and decks. In garages that double as project areas, the carpet stands up to the activities and provides a dust free floor.

Outdoor carpet is available in rolls at home centers and many patio furniture stores. Unlike pile carpet and pad that requires skill and experience, a do-it-yourselfer with basic skills can install indoor-outdoor carpet. Similar to installing other types of floor coverings, prep work is the key to a professional installation.

Preparation
1. Loosen deposits or buildup on the concrete floor, using a floor scraper or square shovel. Remove dirt and debris from the entire floor, using a shop vacuum.
2. Mix some liquid detergent and water in a 5-gallon bucket. Dip a mop in the bucket, wring it out and go over the floor to remove residual dust. Dip and wring out the mop frequently to ensure the concrete is clean.
3. Allow the floor to dry to the touch. Measure the length and width of the floor and multiply the measurements to determine the square-footage of indoor-outdoor carpet. Obtain the carpet based on the size of the floor, and proceed with sizing the carpet.

Sizing and Installation
1. Determine which direction the carpet will install full-width from wall to wall, by measuring the roll of carpet from end to end. Place the roll on the floor, parallel to the particular wall, with one end of the roll at that corner of the room.
2. Fit the end of the roll at the base of the wall and unroll the carpet across the floor to the opposite wall. Align the edge of the carpet uniformly along the base of the adjoining wall, making sure it squared in the room, and mark both edges of the carpet where it aligns with the base of the opposite wall.
3. Pull the carpet away from the wall, and snap a chalk line between the marks. Slide a random piece of one-by-four pine or fir under the carpet and line it up below the chalk line. Use a metal straightedge as a guide, and cut the carpet at the line with a utility knife.
4. Repeat the procedure to size pieces of carpet for the rest of the floor, and fit them in place on the floor with the adjoining edges uniformly aligned. For a filler strip or section, cut it lengthways to fit between the edge of a full piece and the wall. Roll up each piece of carpet straight across the floor, note where each will install, and take the rolls out of the room.

Installation
1. Apply flooring adhesive on the concrete floor, using a 1/8-inch notched trowel. To do this, start at one side of the room that's opposite of a doorway, and apply adhesive using swirl strokes with the trowel. Work backward toward the doorway, apply adhesive on the floor at each side of the doorway, then step out of the room and apply that portion of adhesive. Allow the adhesive to dry to the touch.
2. Position the rolls of carpet end to end along one wall as they will install. Start at one side of the room, and roll out the first section across the floor. Fit the ends at the base of each wall and the edge along the adjoining wall.
3. Secure the section of carpet to the adhesive with a 100-pound flooring roller. Roll the entire section in both directions, making sure to roll the outer edge.
4. Roll out the next roll of carpet, align the ends at the walls and fit the edge tightly and uniformly at the edge of the installed section. Secure it to the adhesive with the flooring roller. Repeat this and install the remaining sections. Roll the entire floor again with the flooring roller to remove any inconsistencies in the surface of the carpet.
