Shampoo to Wash Not to Tarnish
Shampoo is one of the worst known substances to remove from a carpet, because of the way it foams.
So what do you do?
1. The first thing to do is to get as much of the shampoo out of the carpet as possible. To do this you will need a few towels depending on how much shampoo has been dumped. Place the dry towel over the spill and blot up the soap making sure not to rub as this can push the soap further into the carpet.
2. The next thing you are going to want to do is to use something that will reduce the suds that are going to occur when you start to extract the soap. Salt works to reduce suds if you have nothing else or are not wanting to go to the store. I used a mixture of salt on the shampoo and a green stain remover that worked as an anti-foaming agent in the water of my shampooer tank. You can also use a anti-foam solution if you don’t mind chemicals. If you are using the anti-foam solution, mix the anti-foam solution with water and place in your clean water tank. Using a shampooer is the best item to use for extracting the soap. Make sure you use cold water, as hot water will create more suds.
3. After you have spread the salt over the spill and have the water mixed in the clean water tank you can start extracting the shampoo. You are going to have to make a few, well more than a few passes in order to get all of the soap out of the carpet. You can expect to get a lot of suds even with the mixture you use, as shampoo was made to produce a lot of suds.
4. After the water you extract from the carpet begins to come up sud free, you can empty the clean water tank on the shampooer you are using and just start using a mixture of vinegar and water to rinse the carpet. If you used the green stain remover that I did and the salt you will not have to worry about this step. The vinegar mixed with water will remove any residue that could have been left behind from the shampoo and the anti-foam solution. Make a few passes with the vinegar water to make sure you have removed all the residue. Then let the carpet dry. You may find after the carpet has dried that you will need to go over it again but if you want your carpet to last you wont mind.
5. If you don’t have a shampooer the next best thing to do is either rent one or call in a professional and let them deal with it.
