Professional Floor Installation
The most incredible innovation in tile flooring is its ability to realistically mimic countless natural and man-made materials. This is the most prominent tile flooring trend in 2018 and, likely, the years to come. Below, you’ll see new, contemporary tile looks that you may not even believe are tile. Get ready to see how tile has become the ultimate master of disguise.
1. Wood-Look Tile
I wouldn’t call wood-look tile a “new” trend by any means, but it is only building momentum in regards to popularity, and it is quickly becoming a whole-house staple (meaning not just for kitchens and bathrooms, but bedrooms, living rooms and more). I was talking to a friend recently with solid hardwood floors. He told me that he wished these tile options would have been available when he redid his floors and that, given the choice, he would switch in a heartbeat. Will they last? You betcha. Tile is the most durable flooring option on the market and combining that durability with the look of natural hardwood is a combo that is hard to beat.
2. Brick-Look Tile
Brick-look tile started gaining popularity as a wall tile and is now expanding and being used as a flooring option. Personally, I love it as an accent wall, and I do not love it as a floor, but if you like a more European look, you might feel differently. This brick look is so specific and niche-y, it’s unlikely it will last more than a few years.
3. Marble-Look Tile
The classic, timeless, elegant look of marble has been around for centuries and, in 2017, it is re-circuiting once again. Natural marble is soft and porous, susceptible to rings and challenging to keep clean. That’s the reason so many homeowners choose granite (for their counters) and tile (for their floors) instead of natural marble. Marble (or a marble look alike) will always look elegant, classy and expensive. Expect to see this upscale trend for decades to come.
4. Cement-Look Tile
The hottest trend by far is flooring that looks like something it’s not, and the cement look is no exception. Industrial, modern looking cement isn’t typical inside the home, but in 2016, you will see homes embracing that look with cement-look tile. We expect the industrial cement look to stay trendy for the next few years and then trail off when something new pops up.
5. Fabric-Look Tile
That’s right! The soft and subtle textures of linen, silk and more on your tough, sturdy tile floor. These fabric replicas offer a soft look with a lasting, dependable floor. You still get the easy maintenance and cleanup of tile, but your floors look like cozy linen or expensive silk. This is a cool trend. At least, I think it is. But it also doesn’t seem like the kind of trend that will last for decades or become a new classic. Chances are, people will think it’s cool for quite some time, but it won’t be the hot new thing for very long.
6. Metallic-Look Tile
Yes, you read that right. Metallic tiles are popping up all over the place, and they actually look pretty darn cool. Trending in bathroom floors and as accent walls, metallic tile stands out and follows the theme of using new technologies to create looks that had previously been impossible. Keep your eye out for these metallic looks – you might be surprised by how many of these are already prominent. However, don’t expect them to still be hot 20 years from now. They are (I think) the fleeting look that happens to be cool right now.
7. Gray Tile
For the last few years, experts in the industry have tried to predict whether the sudden surge in gray flooring was a fleeting trend or a new staple. I think now we can safely say that gray flooring is here to stay, and you can expect to see even more gray, especially in wood-look flooring in 2018 and beyond. Get yourself some wood-look gray tile and your house will look hot and stylish for years to come!
8. White Tile
White tile is not necessarily a new thing, but it is definitely in the spotlight in 2017. Additionally, white wood-look tile is also making a splash. White tiles brighten up your space and make the room look bigger. But will they stay in the limelight? It depends. White tile mimicking natural stone will always be popular. However, expect white wood looks to be a here today, gone tomorrow type of thing as we see homeowners trend towards blonde wood looks to get the lighter and brighter effect.
9. Espresso Tile
People who like extremes are my kind of people. And the amount of these people seems to be growing. It used to be that neutral was the thing, but people are looking to be bold, stand out and be seen. That is why they are looking for the darkest, espresso, almost black tile flooring, especially espresso wood-look tile flooring. The deep, dark elegance of espresso colored tile is likely to stick around for several years to come.
10. Aqua Tile
Wait…what?! It’s true. Although, we don’t have to like it. No one is looking to blend into the crowd in 2018. On the contrary, people are looking for new ways to make a statement and their floor is one of them. A bright, vibrant, aqua tile floor. It can be cool, and it can be….um, not. My recommendation – if you want to go with this trend, use it in your shower or, maybe, in more of your bathroom. Blues in bathrooms are pretty much a staple, and it’s not nearly as drastic as covering your entire home with bright, in-your-face aqua floors. I think we all know where this is going. You’re free to jump on the bandwagon, but don’t expect it to last very long. You may end up with dated looking floors in as little as 5 years.
11. Geometric & Parquet Tile Patterns
Patterns and shapes once reserved for walls and backsplash are taking floors by storm in 2017. The geometric tile patterns, colors and options are endless, and they give the “bohemian chic” type a way to design in their style without searching countless junk yards to piece things together. Fun, vibrant and eye-catching, 2016 will be full of unique, geometric tiles in the homes of trendy 20 and 30 somethings. Will they last forever? Well, I have a hunch it that many of the more contemporary patterns will stay more of a young, first-time homeowner thing, but I imagine that 10 years from now the hipsters will be all about keeping it around. More classic patterns, however, as pictured above, will likely never go out of style.
12. Herringbone & Chevron Tile Patterns
We’re not talking the 1970s short plank wood parquet flooring. New, trendy herringbone and chevron tile flooring layouts typically use longer planks and add interest and depth to the eye. This trend isn’t likely to last forever, but it sure looks pretty while it’s here. *Note: Herringbone and chevron are note interchangeable terms. In chevron patterns, each tile would be angled to make the point in the center, like a V; in herringbone patterns, pictured above, each rectangular plank meets the other in a staggering zigzag.
13. Arabesque Tile Patterns
Arabesque tiles look like little lanterns. In the past, they were used as backsplash and wall tiles, but 2018 is bringing the mosaics to the floor! This pattern is cute and trendy, but we don’t anticipate it will last too long on the main floors. Shower floors and walls, though, are another story!
14. Subway Tile Patterns
Like arabesque tiles, subway tiles were previously just used as shower flooring, backsplash and wall tile. This fun, modern pattern can give your home a bohemian chic look and add some detail and variety. Just like arabesque tiles, we don’t think this trend will last forever and, in time, we anticipate subway tiles will go back to their roots on walls and shower floors.
15. Tile Shapes
Homeowners are looking beyond traditional square, rectangular and plank tiles and choosing unique shapes to stand out. This includes the aforementioned arabesque and subway tiles but also goes beyond these known shapes. We’ve been seeing hexagon tiles, octagon tiles, and even tiles that look like little clouds in shapes I couldn’t begin to explain. Again, this is a fun “for now” trend that we don’t expect to see in high-end homes beyond 2030 (<– OMG it’s going to be twenty THIRTY. One day.).
16. Large Format Tile / Wide Planks
2017 Tile Flooring Trends: Update your home in style with these tile flooring trends that will stay in style the lifetime of your floor. 2017 Tile Flooring Trends: Update your home in style with these tile flooring trends that will stay in style the lifetime of your floor. Hello big open spaces! The wide plank trend has been huge across the board for flooring, and it is certainly here for the long haul. I predict the large format tile trend is also here to stay. They make your space look bigger, give you fewer grout lines (← reason enough!), and provide a beautiful, clean, modern look. Of course, we will likely reach a point, like with phones, where the size gets excessive. I have a feeling that may happen within the next 5-10 years. Our advice: don’t get sucked into the newest, biggest sizes, but do go with the large format and wide plank sizes currently available on the market.
17. Mixed Width Tile
Our eyes love detail and the unexpected. That is why it is no surprise that mixed width tile floors are in demand. Mixed width tile floors (unsurprisingly) combine planks with different widths to make the flooring pop. This can be done in a pattern or randomly for more variety. As far as longevity, we predict this trend will be around for a while, but it is unlikely that it will become a flooring staple.
18. Ultra Thin Tile
Like iPhone thin. It’s no surprise. In the United States, we do so much shopping online and, as an online flooring company, we know all too well how pesky tile shipping fees can become an issue. Well, it’s (almost) 2018 and there’s a cure for everything these days. Enter: ultra thin tiles. Lighter tiles mean more installation options, which means you can now use tile flooring in areas you couldn’t before. This trend is so new, it’s really hard to tell whether it will continue, but it’s my guess that as technologies advance, tile flooring will continue to get thinner and thinner.
