1. Sweep or Dust Mop Often
One of the most important things you can do for your hardwood is to frequently sweep or dry mop your floor – at least once a week. This will help to prevent dirt and debris from being ground into the finish, potentially scratching your floors.
2. Use a Vacuum To Remove Dirt And Debris Caught In the Cracks
Have you noticed that dirt and debris tend to get caught in the cracks between the planks of your floor? The best and easiest way to clean between the planks is by using a vacuum on a regular basis. When looking at vacuums to use on hardwood, be sure to check the wheels. You’ll want a vacuum with rubber wheels and a beater bar that turns off to prevent it from scratching your floor.
3. Use Only Cleaners Designed For Hardwood Floors
There are many cleaners on the market, but only some are designed for hardwood. Using one that is designed for hard surfaces (tile, laminate, or vinyl) can leave a bad residue on your hardwood and potentially damage the wood. When cleaning, don’t use a lot of water. Instead, work in small sections using only a slightly damp mop or rag and dry with a towel immediately afterward.
4. Clean Water And Spills Off The Floors Immediately
Water and other liquids are very damaging to your hardwood. They can cause some severe problems, including cupping, warping, and mold. By removing any spills immediately after they occur, you can help prevent water from seeping through the cracks and damaging your floors.
5. Refinish
Hardwood floors will eventually start to look grungy and worn, usually after ten years or so. When this happens, it may be time to refinish. Getting a professional to refinish your hardwood will help your hardwood look brand new again, and can be done numerous times before you flooring would need to be replaced. This means that your hardwood can last a lifetime or longer and still look beautiful.
