Carpet Before Paint - Pick your carpeting before you pick up a paintbrush. Paint comes in any shade or tone imaginable, so rest assured you’ll find a hue that goes with your flooring, whether it’s an off-white wool that leans to the gray side or a blue blend of berber. Get to know your carpet up close and personal; it likely has more colors to it than you initially thought. For example, a mottled carpet that appears overall gray at first glance or from a distance, may also have brown, cream or blue fibers. Use the carpet’s undertone as inspiration when choosing paint.
Lighting and Color - If you’ve already laid your carpeting, select a few wall-color paint swatches. Stand the swatches against a wall rather than laying them on the floor -- your paint will be on the wall’s vertical surface and therefore reflect light differently than it would on a horizontal plane, such as the floor. Move them from one wall to the next to see how the light coming from an adjacent window or well-lit room changes the coloring. Instead of using tiny paint swatches, buy sample-size cans of paint and apply a low -- close to the carpet -- 1- to 2-foot square of each color on opposing walls. Check the paint and carpet combination morning, noon and night. As the room’s lighting alters, so will the walls' shades. Choose a color that works with your flooring in any light.
Grounding and Balance - When combining colors, ground the space with the darker shade. Dark color grounds or gives weight and stability to a room and should be used underfoot for this reason. But that doesn't mean your walls have to be stark white or builder's beige. Case in point: If you install charcoal carpeting, you can still use rich color, such as smoky gray or plum, on the walls, just let the flooring be the heavier, more saturated shade for balance.
Picking a Palette - The endless number of carpet and paint combinations can have you spinning in circles, but there are a couple of decorator tricks to help make the palette-picking process a little less dizzying. Turn to your artwork; if you have a beloved painting or print for the space, pull a more dominant color from it for the carpet and pick one of the picture's background tones for the walls. This can bring the room together and let the artwork shine. If you plan to keep your sofa for a long time, use its color for finishing ideas. Look across the color wheel from your couch’s shade and use the opposing hue, such as orange across from blue or mauve across from yellow, for pleasant contrast. Then ground the space by choosing carpeting that’s similar to the walls or to the sofa but slightly darker.
