Fantastic Floors
There are so many different flooring options on the market, how do you know which one is right for you and your family? How do you ensure the right choice for your home aesthetic, budget, and comfort? While there are plenty of places to find the pros and cons for different types of flooring, I like to start with 5 questions to ask YOURSELF before you even dive into that world… that way you’re armed with the knowledge you need to easily say yes or no as you browse through your favorite flooring looks.
1. Who Is the new Flooring For?
This might sound like a strange question, but hear me out for a moment. When choosing flooring for specific rooms or spaces in your home, it’s important to understand who it’s for. Is it an area for your kids to play, spill crafts or make messes? Is it a sweet retreat for a baby to crawl? Are there pets that will be scratching or running? Is it an entry area for all guests?
Defining this question will help you choose between flooring that’s easier to maintain or more wear-scratch resistant, or another aesthetic you’ll be able to maintain.
2. What’s the Climate?
Tempurature considerations, both in the location of your home as well as the location within your home are important. For example, while I LOVE the look, feel and texture of solid hardwood flooring, it’s not recommended here in Florida because of the consistent humidity, though it’s perfect and long-lasting in drier climates. This is where engineered wood – which is simply a layer of real wood on top of a composite – or other engineered flooring is a great alternative and the best of both worlds.
The second consideration here though is the climate and humidity levels within your home. A bathroom, basement or utility room come with a much higher humidity level.
3. How Much Traffic Will your New Flooring Have?
We’ve been in homes with carpeting in the entryway, as well as in the kitchen or around the kitchen island. For us, and especially with kids, this caused a lot of wear-and-tear quickly because they are high-trafficked areas – typically an area I would choose a more weather-proofed option. Whereas I’ve also designed nurseries with the softest of carpet for sweet baby-crawls and because it wasn’t an easily worn-down area it lasted well.
Because it is solution dyed, EF’s carpets don’t fade from exposure to the sun and can be cleaned with a bleach solution without harming the carpet with it’s PureColor technology (meaning the color is throughout the entire fiber). Because the carpets resist staining from things like wine, chocolate and pet accidents, it’s great for pet and kid friendly homes and you don’t have to be paranoid about staining and wear.
4. Have you Seen the New Flooring Yet?
Trying out samples and using a visualizer tool to see the new flooring in your space before spending your hard earned cash is one of the BEST ways to make the right choice the FIRST time!
Just like choosing paint for your walls, it only takes a little extra time (and sometimes money) beforehand, and makes a big difference in the long run.
5. Get Hands On!
Note that with a decision as major and permanent as flooring, I’d always recommend seeing samples in person, as you can’t completely assess the product based on photos alone.
