How to Choose Carpet Styles

Although carpets come in hundreds of varieties, they can all be categorized into three styles based on how they are cut. Carpet piles, the loops of thread that form during the weaving process, can be trimmed into cut piles, left as loop piles or patterned in some combination of the two, known as cut and loop. While there are many other variables involved in choosing a carpet, these are the three basic styles.

Pile Choices

When you think of a plush, soft carpet, you're probably thinking of a cut pile carpet. Cut pile carpets come in four subcategories: Saxony, which is softest; textured, which is smoothest; frieze, which is most durable; and cable, which is most elegant. Loop pile carpets, also known as Berber carpets, are more sturdy than cut pile but less pleasant underfoot. Cut-and-loop carpets can be the most visually interesting and don't show footprints or vacuum tracks as easily as cut pile carpets.

Look and Feel

The carpet in a room has a significant effect on the room's design and overall look, so it's important to select a style that suits your aesthetic. The best way to determine which options are good for the room is to pick up some samples from a carpet or flooring store and bring them home. Spend some time looking at them and imagining them covering the whole floor, and see how each sample feels to the touch. Narrow down your options to several you like.

Durability

If you have children or pets or you frequently host parties, the carpet's durability may be an issue for you. Generally, frieze, small-looped Berber and cut and loop last longer than Saxony, textured, cable or large-looped Berber. The type of fiber in the carpet and quality of materials can also affect the durability, so you may be able to compromise by using a less-sturdy style and a more-sturdy material. For example, if you really want a Saxony-style carpet but you're worried about durability, opt for a sturdy fiber, such as nylon, rather than polyester.

Tracks and Imprints

Another element to consider is how easily the carpet style reveals vacuum tracks, footprints and indentations. Saxony carpets, because of their thick, long piles, show every imprint. This makes them a better choice for rooms you use less often. Textured and frieze carpets hide tracks, while cable carpets suffer from foot traffic even more than Saxony ones. Loop pile carpets don't show tracks, but large-loop varieties can show imprints. Cut-and-loop carpets hide tracks, imprints and dirt but often have visible seams. If a smooth, polished look is important to you, opt for a style that hides imprints.
