Tips on Buying Carpet

Carpet Sale in Houston

Buying wall-to-wall carpeting for your home can be a serious investment, so you want to be sure that you choose the right carpet. With all of the materials, textures, colors and patterns available, though, shopping for carpeting can definitely be overwhelming. But if you prepare yourself before you hit the showroom, you can save yourself a lot of time and frustration -- and wind up with the ideal carpet for your home.

Consider Location

With so many material and pile options, it helps to narrow your choices before you even hit the store. The best way to whittle down the list of possibilities is to consider the room in your home where you plan to have the carpet installed. If you are choosing carpeting for a heavily trafficked area such as a family room or hallway, you'll want to select a durable, easy to clean material like nylon or triexta. In a living room or bedroom, fibers with a soft, luxurious feel like wool or polyester work best. Near an entrance or mudroom, a water- and stain-resistant option like polypropylene is your best bet. When it comes to the pile, a dense style like plush or saxony is ideal for a formal space like a living room or dining room. In a family room and other heavily trafficked areas, opt for a textured plush and frieze pile that hides footprints and stains more easily.

Get High-Quality Padding

While the fiber and pile of a carpet determines its feel, the padding used beneath it also plays a significant role in how it feels underfoot. However, in addition to making the carpet feel more cushioned, good padding can also help make improve its appearance and durability by offering more protection to the fibers. Opt for high-quality padding when choosing your carpet -- and don't worry about the color. It won't be visible beneath the carpet.

Choose Color Carefully

When it comes to the carpet itself, color is important. You'll find a wide variety of shades and patterns at the showroom, and it may be difficult to sort through all the options. However, keep in mind that wall-to-wall carpeting covers a large area in a room, so while a bright, vibrant shade may seem striking in the store, it can easily overpower a room. You're usually better off choosing a neutral shade like tan, gray or taupe, which will blend into the room and work with virtually any color palette. If you're carpeting a smaller room, though, it helps to select a lighter shade because it makes the space feel larger. You don't have to go with white in a heavily used space like a family room, but a dove gray or light sand carpet can help give the illusion of a larger room.

Get Accurate Quote

It's important to have a firm budget in mind when you shop for your carpet so you know what options you can afford and which are out of your price range. However, you must get an accurate quote from the salesperson or you may be in for an unpleasant surprise. The cost per square foot isn't the only fee that you need to worry about -- depending on the retailer, you may face additional charges for delivery, preparation and installation. Your installer may even charge for removing and replacing furniture from the room to be covered and disposing of the old carpet or flooring. Make sure to ask for the total cost of your project, not just the carpet itself.
