Carpet on the Floor Right
Rolled-up carpets can develop creases and folds that show up when the carpet is unrolled.
Creases can also appear due to inconsistent tension within the structure of the rug. There are several methods to make a creased carpet lie flat, including tape, sun exposure, and placing heavy objects on the carpet. The steps below describe these and other methods used to flatten carpets.
1. Unroll your carpet on a flat surface. The carpet needs to be laid completely flat to smooth it out correctly. If the corners stick up, fold them under. Allow the carpet to sit for at least 24 to 28 hours to flatten out under its own weight. You may have to wait several weeks for some carpets.
2. Use the following methods to help the flattening process if the carpet doesn't flatten on its own:
Fold the carpet's creases in the opposite direction. This is known as "reverse rolling" or "back-rolling." Listen closely for cracking noises as you fold the creases back. If you hear any, stop immediately.
Place heavy objects like furniture on top of the carpet, allowing the weight to flatten out folds and creases.
Tape the corners with double-sided carpet tape. Carpet tape has a strong double-sided adhesion that works best in low-moisture environments. Look for a long-lasting carpet tape that won't rot.
Place your carpet in direct sunlight. Several hours under the sun in temperatures of 70 to 85 degrees should release much of the carpet's tension. This practice is a good prelude to reverse rolling.
Have the carpet steamed by a professional steamer. This is typically the best option for carpets with inconsistent tension.
3. Lay the carpet completely flat in the area you desire it to be.
