How to Stretch Carpet

Carpet Stretched Well

Wrinkled, loose carpet is not only unsightly; it is also a nuisance that can cause you to trip when you walk across it.

You may choose to hire a professional to stretch it for you, a good idea if the carpet is older or has been stretched several times before. If you want to save some money and try out your home repair skills, you can learn how to stretch carpet yourself.

1.- Peel the old carpet back to free it from the tack strip, starting in one corner and pulling slowly to ease the carpet away from the tacks. Try grabbing the corner of the carpet with a pair of pliers and then gently tug it away from the tack strip. Once you get started, it should pull away like a zipper.

2.- Pull out staples or tacks from the pad before lifting it from the floor. Lift the pad back from the edges of the walls enough to allow space for you to work with the tack strips.

3.- Remove the old tack strips using a sturdy flat-head screwdriver, claw of a hammer or a pry bar. Wear work gloves while handling old and new tack strips as they are made of setting nails on one side and razor-sharp tacks on the other.

4.- Set the new tack strips about 1⁄4 inch (0.6 cm) from the wall where you pulled up the old ones, using a pair of tin snips to cut them in lengths to fit. Lay them so that the gripping nails on top (the sharp nails that'll hold the carpet in place) are pointed toward the wall. Place a chisel or pry bar on top of the setting nails (those pointed down to the floor) and hammer them to sink them into the floor.

5.- Pick up a few carpet tools at a home improvement store to help you complete this home maintenance task: a power stretcher, a knee kicker and a carpet cutter. (Hold off on renting this equipment until you have the new tack strips in place as you want to be ready to start using them as soon as you get them home; renting them, then setting the new strips could cost you a couple valuable hours of your rental period.)

6.- Reset the pad, trimming it with the carpet cutter along the tack strip then stapling it to the floor about every three inches next to the tack strip and along all seams.
Cut diagonally at corners of the room and around door frames so it'll fall into place when you trim off the excess.

7.- Lay the carpet back down onto the floor with the power stretcher head about 6 inches (15.2 cm) from the carpet's un-anchored edge. Press down on the lever of the power stretcher to smooth out the carpet wrinkles.

8.- If the lever requires too much pressure to push down, you're stretching the carpet too tight. Likewise, if it takes almost no effort to push the lever down, you aren't stretching it tight enough.

9.- After you've stretched the carpet the long lengths of the room, remove the power stretcher.

10.- Place the head of the knee kicker about 6 inches (15.2 cm) from the wall and use your leg (just above the kneecap) to finish the stretch.

11.- Embed the stretched edge of the carpet into the tack strip with your hand before trimming it.

12.- Work along the newly-stretched edge of the carpet with the carpet cutter to trim off the excess as the tool traps the carpet against the wall or woodwork.
If having to use a utility knife, cut very slowly and cautiously so you don't over-trim.
