The official answer, of course, is "No, laminate flooring cannot be exposed to water in any quantities." I've maintained the party line for years until recently when I decided to put laminate to the test and determine its exact breaking point.
The results were surprising. I'd previously assumed that laminate's high-density fiberboard core would instantly swell at the first sign of water. Instead, I found that it held up quite well against moisture. In fact, I had to push it far beyond the limits of normal use to reach that breaking point.
Laminate flooring has two primary defenses against water. The first is consumer education: homeowners know not to install laminate in high-moisture areas. They also know to quickly remove spilled water in places where it is installed. The second is the wear layer. When laminate is properly locked, none of the underlying fiberboard should be exposed.
The takeaway is not that you can start installing laminate flooring next to bathtubs. It's more that you can have greater confidence that normal amounts of moisture will not instantly turn your flooring into an unrepairable water-logged sponge. If lots of water is in your floor's future, then waterproof laminate or, more realistically, luxury vinyl flooring, are your best alternatives.
