Considerations
The compression used in manufacturing porcelain tiles removes microscopic air pockets, making them heavier than ceramic tile of the same size. This extra weight makes them slightly harder to handle and easier to drop. When installing porcelain tiles on walls, an aggressive adhesive is required to prevent tile slippage.
While you can cut ordinary ceramic tiles with standard tile tools, you may need a wet diamond saw for cutting porcelain tiles cleanly. Although porcelain tiles are strong and durable, not all are rated for floor use. Check the rating when you select your floor and wall tiles. Porcelain tiles are available as either glazed or unglazed; both are suitable for bathroom use, although glazed tiles are easier to clean.
Preparation
All surfaces must be completely dry before beginning installation. Ensure that all surfaces are smooth, flat and secure enough to handle the weight of porcelain tiles. Backer board is a popular substrate for bathroom tile installations. Before installing the tiles, remove faucets, tub spouts and any other hardware in the tile field. Remove baseboards, trim and molding for floor tile installations. If the tile is to be installed around the toilet, remove the toilet and allow the floor to dry. Apply a layer of thinset mortar over the surfaces, using a notched trowel, the day before the installation. This will create grooves on the floor and walls that will hold more of the adhesive compound.
