1. Consider Your Room - Consider the room you wish to tile and take into account the amount of traffic that goes through that room. You need to decide how durable the tile needs to be before you make a decision. You will find that typically a tile is rated on a scale from one to five with five as the most durable and one as the least durable. This means if you are looking for the most durable tiles you will want something that rates a four or five. Although kitchen tile is resilient, it still requires upkeep and the longevity of each material differs.
2. How Will The Tiles Be Maintained? - Other things to consider are how easy can the tile be cleaned, how often does it need to be cleaned and how often will you have to replace it. Consider how that room is used. Is it a play room? Will there be lots of activities that require running, bouncing, jumping and other types of play going on? These factors can also help you decide on the type of tile you need for that room.
3. Budget - Establish a budget for your tile floor before you get too attached to the look you want. Some tiles can be inexpensive like vinyl and some tiles can be very expensive such custom ceramic tiles. If you are working with a tight budget, consider porcelain as a cost effective alternative. Porcelain mixes beauty with the hardness of stone but it costs much less and is has a lot easier upkeep than marble which has to be resealed periodically. Check out the different tiles and their prices and get estimates for how much you will need for your room to get an idea of what types of tile will work with your budget.
4. Choose Your Tile - Next, you need to look at the type of tiles that you have available and use the factors from Step 1 and your budget from Step 2 to decide what types of tile will work in that room. If you are considering tiling a kitchen, you might want to consider cork, bamboo or vinyl tiles. Materials like glass would be used for backsplashes and quarry, porcelain and ceramic are great for counters and sometimes also floors. Other tiles that are great for floors are brick, concrete, mosaic, terracotta and terrazzo. Always consider whether you need something moisture proof, scuff proof or non-slip.
5. Decide How It Will Be Installed - According to Tiles Direct, another important question to ask yourself is how will it be installed. Are you installing it yourself? If so, and you have never laid tile before, can the tile you are choosing be laid down by a novice? Finally, once you consider the type of tile you want to use, you need to find out what size tiles they come in.
6. Colors and Patterns - Next, decide on the color or pattern that you want from the tile. If you don’t want color or patterns, then you will have a lot more options. If you do, then your options will be limited. Ceramic tiles often come in solid colors and other types of tiles will come only in patterns. For example, glazed porcelain is great for high traffic areas and comes in a wide variety of textures, finishes and colors. You can also get really creative and use a variety of color, textures and sizes to create your own masterpiece. Once you make this decision you will have eliminated some of your tile possibilities.
