Top 10 "Do's and Don'ts" for Flooring

Fantastic Floors

Don'ts

1. Don't use hardwood floors in rooms where water spills and splashes are the norm, unless the wood is properly sealed and maintained to prevent water damage.

2. Don't select dining room or kitchen area rugs that are too small for the area. You need a minimum of 36 inches from the table's edge to the edge of the rug to comfortably pull chairs out and be seated without straddling the rug and the floor.

3. Don't choose large-scaled patterns for carpet used on stairs. Trying to match the pattern, when it's laid on the steps, leads to a lot of wasted rug and money.

4. Don't allow the repairman to pull out the refrigerator or trash compactor without first protecting the floor covering. Tiles and woods can be scratched, and even super-strong vinyls tear when caught on something sharp and tugging ensues.

5. Don't forget the thresholds! In adjoining rooms, choose floor coverings of similar thickness or height to prevent tripping or stubbed toes.

6. Don't choose light-colored carpet for high-traffic areas — no matter how much you love it — unless you can clean it often or plan on replacing it sooner rather than later.

7. Don't go cheap on flooring. Pay as much as you can afford, because floor covering is the one thing you use every time you enter a room.

8. Don't forget to include hidden charges in your floor-covering budget — padding for carpets, grout and sealant for tiles, delivery, furniture moving and installation!

9. Don't use a solid-colored carpet in dining areas or family rooms. Patterned rugs are a great choice because they mask soils and spills.

10. Don't forget to seal a natural stone floor covering. Avoid water rings and moisture damage by getting the right finish and type of sealant for your surface.

Do's

1. First determine how you are going to use a room, then start looking at floor-covering selections.

2. Shag carpets and other long-pile rugs are back in style. Enjoy the new textures and forget the old ideas — this is not your grandmother's carpet.

3. Warm up cold bathrooms with radiant heat in the subflooring, or use a beautifully plush area rug that is made to resist mildew.

4. Sisal and other natural fibers will stain quickly and frequently if not treated with a sealant. Spend the money and save the rug.

5. Use one of the fabulous new polypropylene woven rugs as a walk-off or runner at doors or in high-traffic areas; they're quick, easy to clean ... and look great!

6. Apply UV (ultraviolet ray) film on windows to protect valuable rugs and floor finishes from sun damage. Think of it as sunscreen for flooring!

7. Never use wall tiles on bathroom floors as they are inherently slippery. Get corresponding floor tiles for a perfect match.

8. When shopping for floor coverings, always bring samples of your fabrics, paint colors and wallcoverings to narrow down your choices and to make the best selection.

9. If you have allergies but still want to go wall-to-wall, think about choosing natural fiber floor coverings, such as sisal, coir, seagrass and abaca. They pose fewer problems than conventional carpets.

10. Get competitive floor-covering quotes, and make sure they include the same elements — the same yardage of carpet and quality of pad, the same footage of tile and quality of grout and sealant, as well as any up-charges for flights of stairs, removal of old floor covering and freight.
