The Do’s And Don'ts Of Area Rug Decorating

Professional Carpet Installation in Houston

Unless you’re an interior designer yourself, you might not realize it that adding a new area rug to your floor can really change the look of an entire room. Area rugs are a great low-commitment alternative to traditional wall-to-wall carpeting. They’re easier to move around, clean, and change for a new style when you get a little tired of having the same thing for years at a time.

Here is a great list of trendy do’s and don’t’s for your area rug decorating styles!

DO

Leave an equal border of space on all sides.

The main idea is to center rugs neatly on the floor of the room. Depending on the size of the rug and of the room, you can leave anywhere from 8 inches to 24 inches or more on each side. Of course, if the rug doesn’t perfectly match the shape and design of the room, it can be hard to line this up perfectly, but do your best to make it look symmetrical. It isn’t that hard to do and can be an easy way to make your room look just a little bit more classy or more put-together.

Experiment with different shapes.

Plenty of people feel more comfortable sticking with a classic rectangular carpet, but we encourage you to take 2018 as an opportunity to try something new. Circular rugs or oblong, oval-shaped rugs can be a fun way to space up an otherwise traditionally-decorated room. It might be a little more difficult to properly placed these non-traditional shapes, but it will certainly help your room stand out a little more.

Read up on the best ways to clean your area rugs.

Most area rugs should come with cleaning instructions, or at least the type of fiber should be clearly labelled so you can do the appropriate research yourself. Many natural fiber area rugs are quite inexpensive but don’t respond well to any liquids, even cleaning solutions, so have to be recycled and replaced whenever there’s a spill. A regular schedule of vacuuming and beating is a great way to prevent dust buildup, but different types of fibers require different approaches to stain removal.

Extend the rug all the way under furniture, especially in your bedroom.

This helps the room look much more put-together and cohesive. Try and keep all the legs of your furniture pieces right on top of the rug, especially smaller pieces. In your bedroom, you want there to be plenty of space on the sides of the bed covered by the rug. When you get up in the morning, you don’t want the first thing to feel is the cold hard floor under your feet! Experts suggest that there should be at least twelve inches of rug on the floor extending from the sides of a twin or full-sized bed, but at least eighteen inches of rug for a queen or king-sized bed. That’s why it’s important to take measurements of your room, furniture, and other details before you go shopping so that you have an idea of what you’re looking for and how big it should be.

Explore with contrasting colors.

Don’t feel like an area rug has to be extremely matchy-matchy with the rest of a room’s color scheme. A contrasting color or even a different shade in the same color family can make a great addition to any room. The good thing about solid colors is that if you want to switch things up a bit, you can always take the rug out and place it in a different room if you want to.

DON'T

Be afraid of funky patterns and bright colors.

We just spoke about how flattering a contrasting shade can be, but there’s no rule that says you have to stick to a solid color. Many people tend to default to a more neutral color palette simply because “it goes with everything.” It’s great to have a good eye to prevent clashing, but area rugs can be a great way to add some colorful fun into an otherwise drab room. The good thing about area rugs is that they’re easy to change out and can be relatively inexpensive, so if you decide you don’t like it after a while, you can always swap it for a new one. But it’s a good idea to experiment with different trendy patterns and colors and see what you like best!

Skimp on the size of the rug.

We talked earlier about how important is that all of your furniture fits on the carpet, especially major pieces of furniture like your bed. However, it’s worth restating. Many homeowners tend to choose a rug that is too small either because they don’t realize the true dimensions of their room or they don’t want to pay the full price tag for a larger rug. Just keep in mind that picking the right size rug right now will prevent you from having to buy a replacement later, and even an expensive area rug will still be less expensive than wall-to-wall carpeting.

Place your highest-quality rug in an area of extremely high traffic.

Of course, part of the idea of having an area rug is to make the people in your home feel more comfortable, but you should plan carefully where to place your most expensive rugs to prolong their lifespan. For instance, it’s not necessarily a smart idea to place a very expensive rug right in the dining room, where there are likely to be spills and stains, especially if there are small children in your house. Save the best carpets for your office or bedroom, and give the dining room or living room a cheaper option made from synthetic fibers that are easy to clean if necessary.

Hopefully you found these decorating tips helpful! Don’t be afraid to break out of your comfort zone. If you’re not sure what to do, the great part of area rugs is that they’re easily replaceable and much less expensive than wall-to-wall carpeting. Have fun decorating!
