How to Install Carpet on Concrete
Whether doing it for aesthetic reasons or to help warm up a cold room, carpeting concrete floors is something most people can do in a day or two.
Why pay someone else to do it? By learning to prep the room for carpeting and using the right materials, you'll ensure that the job will go quickly and smoothly.
Prepping the Room
1. Completely empty the room.
2. Check the room for moisture problems.
3. Air out the carpet out before installation.
4. Remove any doors for ease of installation.
5. Lift any baseboards.
6. Clean the concrete thoroughly, using the appropriate cleaner for the stains you find.
7. Fill in any cracks or imperfections in the surface.
8. Use a leveling product to flatten any low spots in the slab.
9. Control the temperature in the room.
Laying Carpet
1. Lay the tack strip.
2. Lay padding strips.
3. Cut carpet to size, allowing approximately 6 inches (15.2 cm) excess all around.
4. Lay carpet out and use a rented knee kicker to force the carpet into the far corner.
5. Finish the edges.
6. Put down transition strips as needed.
