A beautiful tile floor shouldn’t be tarnished by dirty grout lines. Because grout is a porous material, dirt, grime, and spills can seep in just below the surface and make it difficult to clean. When mopping just doesn’t work anymore, here are some tips to brighten up that grout and make your floors look like new.
• You’ll have to spend some time on your hands and knees for this project, so placing a folded towel underneath yourself to kneel or sit on will help.
• Start by trying some warm, soapy water and a stiff-bristled brush. You can find a good brush at any home or grocery store, and most have easy grip handles. Some even come with a long handle to give your knees a break.
• Use a circular scrubbing motion to allow the bristles to get into the tiny crevices of the grout.
• If the soapy water isn’t doing the trick, try using a mixture of one part vinegar and one part water.
• For even tougher stains, apply a paste of baking soda and water, then spray on the vinegar mixture. This will cause a foaming reaction that will really get down into the pores of the grout. Let it sit for a couple minutes to get the most cleaning power, then scrub and rinse away.
• If these techniques still aren’t working, you may want to purchase a special grout cleaning product. You can pick these up at a home store like Home Depot or Bed, Bath, and Beyond.
• Finally, if all else fails, call in the professionals. Companies like Stanley Steamer and Blackmon-Mooring offer professional tile and grout cleaning services but they can be expensive. An added bonus of using a professional service is that most have the add-on option of applying a grout sealant for you. These sealants will give your grout and tile a nice shine and will also help prevent future stains.
Whether you choose to do it yourself or hire a service, getting your grout sparkling clean will give new life to your floors and brighten up your home.
