Avoid looped carpets - Some traditional styles of carpet are created on gigantic mechanical looms which add threads to the carpet from both sides to create a durable and desirable woven finish. These carpets are generally referred to as looped carpets, but if you are a cat owner, these premium carpets are to be avoided. The small loops of carpet material that protrude above the surface of these carpets essentially function as miniature snare traps for your cat’s toes and claws — this can cause serious damage to your carpet over time but can also harm your cat, potentially breaking their claws and leading to foot and ankle injuries.
As such, cat owners should opt for the so called ‘tufted’ carpet types. Instead of loops of thread, the surface of these carpets is covered with simple straight threads (or tufts) which pose no danger to your cat’s paws. As an added bonus, these types of carpets are generally cheaper than woven carpets, although they may not be quite as resistant to wear over the long-term.
Go dark - Even the most thoroughly house-trained cat can still suffer the occasional accident, particularly if they are ill or distressed, and the acidic nature of cat urine and faeces can badly and irrevocably stain paler shades of carpet even after thorough cleaning. As such, choosing darker shades of carpeting is generally a safer bet. Choosing dark carpeting may also help to conceal shed cat hair between vacuuming, a particularly useful trait during invariably hairy moulting periods, though this obviously does not apply if your cat has white or very pale fur.
Protect against accidents - Choosing a dark carpet that can hide such unpleasant stains does not mean that a cat-safe carpet should go unprotected. Accidental urination and/or defecation can also permanently damage the fibres of your carpet, and moisture can soak through the pile or your carpet to damage and warp the floorboards beneath. This moisture can also cause your floorboards to rot, creating a health hazard and necessitating expensive replacements.
To protect against this scenario, your carpet should be backed with a robust, waterproof underlay at the very least. This underlay provides a layer of protection for your vulnerable floorboards and is also padded to provide a softer feeling underfoot. However, waterproof underlays do nothing to protect the carpet itself, so you may wish to supplement this protection with a waterproofing treatment for your carpet. These treatments can be applied yourself with spray bottles or cans, or can be professionally administered either before or after the point of sale. Be aware that these treatments can slightly alter the look, feel and colour of your carpeting.
