Hardwood and humidity: How to survive the summer heat

Hardwood floor remodeling

Summer! Isn’t it great? Longer days, days by the pool, barbecues and spending time with the family. All things we love about summer. But depending on where you live summer also brings with it incredible humidity levels, hardwood floorings’ natural enemy.

If left unchecked, humidity will break into your home through doors, windows, cracks, even by osmosis through the cement foundation it seems. Humidity moves through your house like an invisible force seeping into your furniture, your carpeting and the worst of all your hardwood floors. You might go to bed one night with your hardwood floors looking prim and pristine and the next morning wake up to a room you barely recognize. Floor boards contorted out of shape, large spaces between boards where there were none before and a large mound in the middle of your room that looks as if someone was trying to hide a basketball underneath your floor boards.

Okay this is a little extreme and is not unlikely to happen overnight (unless you live in the middle of the Amazon), but it did happen to a neighbour of mine that lives in a basement apartment. After going away for a few weeks in the middle of a hot and humid summer he returned to find his solid hardwood pine floors had swelled so much in the humidity that they pushed themselves up from the floor and formed this half basketball shape in the middle of his bedroom.

To avoid problems like this you are going to need to regulate the humidity levels in your home in order to keep your floors looking great and straight. This can easily be done if you have modern central air conditioning and heating that regulates temperature in your home to keep you and your floors happy.

If you don’t have one of those fancy pants systems, you are going to need to get yourself a dehumidifier most likely only for the basement. Now I know what you are thinking, “I have engineered hardwood floors so I don’t need to worry about humidity levels.” Well my friend, while engineered hardwoods are better at resisting the effects of humidity if you live in an area prone to fluctuations in humidity levels like I do then you man-created floors will need some help as well.

You also don’t want to leave your floors in a zero moisture environment so those of you reading from places like oh say the desert then you are going to want to buy a humidifier. Dry conditions can make hardwood floor shrink and become more brittle and prone to chips and scratches.

So the gist of it all keep the conditions in your house at a nice middle ground and both you and your floors will be happy.
