Smaller apartments or houses are now a reality in Australia, but no one likes to feel cramped and overwhelmed. Perhaps, you may have a large house, yet somewhere inside there’s probably a room that feels so small that it’s hardly worth counting toward square meterage.
Well, there are at least 2 things you can do to make your small living spaces appear bigger:
I. De-Cluttering And Redecorating
Here’s how you can trick the eye and make your space seem much bigger than it really is.
1. Clear Out The Clutter
There’s nothing that makes a small space feel cramped more than having too much stuff. Work out ways to get things out of view and find ways to organise them behind doors or displayed nicely on shelves.
2. Add Built-In Shelving
Shallow built-in shelving can help you gain storage and maintain floor space. Stick to a shelving that’s no more than 30 centimeters deep. Recessing the bed in the middle of the shelving also prevents it from encroaching on much-needed floor space. Try taking the shelves all the way to the ceiling to make the ceiling look higher.
3. Go For Mirrored Wardrobe Doors
Mirrored cabinet doors in bedroom using a mirror to double your room’s visual size is a trick that’s sure to please. The effect tends to work best when you can take the mirrors from floor to ceiling and wall-to-wall. You will not only open up your space, but also you will no longer need a full length mirror in your bedroom or closet!
4. Paint The Ceiling
Painting the ceiling with the same hue as the walls can help to erase shadow lines, and when the walls and ceiling are of the same color, it’s harder for your eye to tell where the room’s parameters start and end, so the room looks larger.
II. Installing The Right Flooring
If you think you’ve run out of decorating options, or if you want to make a more permanent change to your room, there’s an often-overlooked solution to make a room look bigger – installing the right kind of flooring.
1. Use Planks, Not Strips
Visually expand your space by choosing planks, which are wider than 7.5 centimeters (strips are skinnier than 7.5 centimeters). Choose the longest wall in your room and run them parallel to this to make it look like your room runs forever!
2. Keep It Consistent
Don’t install a different type of flooring in each space in your home; use the same type of flooring throughout. This will create a ‘seamless’ look that ties one room into another, giving you the illusion of having more space.
3. Install Flooring Diagonally
Laying the flooring diagonally across your room will make it look bigger. This rule applies for hardwood, stone, tiles or laminate.
4. Use Over-Sized Tiles
Increase the appearance of more floor space by selecting flooring tiles that are larger than the standard 300mm size. Install with minimal grout and rectified edges to enhance visual space.
5. Use Darker Woods
Dark coloured wood floors will make your space look bigger if paired with the right wall colour. And a dark, larger plank wood flooring will make your small space look amazing! Cool colours recede and warm colours advance, so make sure you choose a cool colour for the walls, ceiling, trims and moldings. The right combination of dark and cool colours can make any room expand before your eyes.
