Tips for Protecting Your Wood Floors
1. - Sweep and Clean Regularly. - A simple way to protect your wood floors is to remember to sweep up regularly. Even small particles of dust, dirt, gravel, or other debris can dent, dull, and scratch wood floors when they are stepped on or tracked throughout the house. Make sure to sweep up often and you’ll eliminate the elements that can shorten the life of your floors.
2. - Vacuum Properly. - Sweeping is best for wood floors, as broom bristles are softer and less damaging to the surface of the wood. You can vacuum, but make sure you are using the right attachment for your floor. Trying to vacuum with the regular carpet attachment can be too rough and can scratch wood floors. Make sure to use the hardwood attachment on your vacuum, as it is specially designed to be gentler on wood while still getting all that dust and dirt off the floor.
3. Swear Off Mopping. - Many homeowners that are new to wood may mop their floor not realizing the damage that mopping can do. Saturating your wood floor in moisture can cause water to seep into the wood fibers and cause boards to swell, warp, or twist, permanently damaging hardwood. If wood floors are in need of a deep cleaning, use a barely damp rag and then dry floors immediately afterward with a towel. Also never use hot water when cleaning wood floors, lukewarm water will do just fine.
4. - Choose Cleaners Carefully. - There are a number of products that claim to be safe for hardwood floors, but many of these cleaners can actually cause damage to your floors when used repeatedly, as they can strip off the finish and dull the shine of your hardwood. As a general rule, avoid cleaners that use vinegar or ammonia, as these highly acidic substances can dull or etch the floor over time. Oil soaps can create buildup on floors that can be difficult to remove, and they can also dull the finish on hardwood.
5. - Check Your Shoes at the Door. - If you do wear shoes around the house, pay attention to what kind of shoes you wear. Wearing high heels around your home can cause significant damage to floors, as the heels can act like tiny hammers on hardwood. As soon as you walk in your home, it’s best to remove your shoes and leave them near the door.
6. - Prevent Scratches. - If you have four-legged friends in your home, remember to keep their nails clipped short and filed smooth as their claws can ding wood floors, especially if they are a larger or heavier breed. Cats can cause damage to your flooring as well, so consider using claw caps to prevent this from happening. This can also be a good method of protecting your furniture.
7. - Purchase Rugs and Carpets. - Placing rugs and carpets on floors can help protect them, especially in high traffic areas such as hallways and entryways. As an alternative to using felt pads underneath the legs of your furniture, you can place a rug to add style as well as protection to your floors.
8. - Implement a Care Schedule. - Wood floors need regular maintenance to keep their luster, shine and durability. Aside from cleaning hardwood regularly and properly, you should also plan on lightly sanding and recoating floors with an additional layer of finish every 5 to 7 years. Wood floors with a protective layer of wax will likely need to be stripped with a new layer of wax applied once a year or so.
