Tips for Installing Vinyl Sheet Flooring
1. - Subfloor Preparation. - Proper subfloor preparation can make or break your vinyl floor installation. If the subfloor is rough, you'll feel it under the vinyl. A rough subfloor may even cause the vinyl to crack or split. If you're laying a floor over old vinyl or linoleum, it's probably better to simply leave the old flooring in place and ensure it's clean.
If you had to remove tiles or the old vinyl was damaged and had to come out, the floor may be covered with glue residue. Many installers cover such a subfloor with an underlayment of 1/4-inch plywood to provide a smooth and problem-free substrate.
2. - Make a Template. - Measure the dimensions of your floor so you can find its area in order to calculate how much vinyl you need. Instead of relying on measurements to cut the vinyl, however, it's prudent to make a template with kraft paper. Cover the entire floor with the paper and cut it accurately around all the walls and obstacles such as cabinets. When you lay it on top of the vinyl that has been unrolled in the sun to flatten, you'll be able to cut it more accurately than you would by making measurements with a tape measure.
3. - Installing the Vinyl. - Remove any baseboards in the room and cut the bottoms of any door jambs that need to be trimmed before you make the paper template. After tacking the subfloor with a damp rag to remove dust, lay double-sided carpet tape around the perimeter of the room. Leave the paper backing on the tape. Lay the vinyl and align all the edges with the walls. Starting along one wall, remove the backing from the tape and press down on the vinyl. Use a roller to flatten the vinyl as you tape the edges on the perpendicular and opposite walls.
4. - Seams. - It's best to avoid seams whenever possible, and since vinyl flooring comes in 6- and 12-foot rolls, you should be able to do that for all but the largest floors. When you do need a seam, roll out the vinyl on both sides of it, overlapping the seam by an inch or so, then cut both sheets at the same time. When you install the sheets, cut a single line through both of them at once, using a straightedge as a guide. Remove the offcuts. Lay carpet tape under the seam and press the edges together with a roller.
